Temperance means choosing substances that will maintain a healthy, balanced life.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Romans 12:1.
One of the principles that God created all life to function under was consistency. We cannot maintain health if we are sporadic in obeying the laws that govern our being! The apostle Paul wrote, "Let your moderation be known unto all men", and again he wrote, "...every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things." Philippians 4:5; 1 Corinthians 9:25.
Moderation and temperance are lacking in our society today. This is an age of excess, money, leisure, food, sex, drugs, alcohol, T.V., music, and sports have become the gods of most people. Forgetting that we were created in the image and likeness of God, the whole world is poised on the brink of self-destruction.
Because the Creator's laws, (physical, mental, and spiritual) are disregarded, sickness, disease, crime, poverty, war, and death are global. When we fully realize that we were indeed created in the image and likeness of God, and what this really means, then our desires, lifestyles, and goals will become profoundly different. There are fixed laws of nature that God designed that we should live under. Once these laws are violated, then the results are sickness, disease, and finally death.
True temperance is a lifestyle that dispenses with all that destroys, and with moderation uses that which is healthy. Many believe that an occasional use of unhealthy practices or substances will not harm us, but this attitude is what put this world into a nightmare of sin. Many times, one seemingly small indulgence will lead us, or influence someone else, down the wide road of self-destruction. How often has that first alcoholic drink led to a lifetime of disaster? Or one indiscriminate act of sexual impurity led to a lifetime of regret? One ancient Bible prophet wrote, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee...seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God." Hosea 4:6.
Life Before The Sin Problem
Our lives, bodies, and minds are all wonderful gifts from God. Out of respect and appreciation for these gifts we need to honor God by taking good care of ourselves in the best possible lifestyle. God in His wisdom devised a plan whereby the entire universe would operate in perfect peace and harmony. The cornerstone of His plan was based upon the action-principle of LOVE. All creation operates upon this principle, both living and non-living substances. You may be asking how can non-living things like minerals, water, rocks, etc. work on love? Very simply; one facet of love is service. All of the non-living matter was created by God in order to serve and sustain life for plants and trees and ultimately to serve the needs of humans. If this wonderful action-principle of love becomes disrupted, as happened on planet Earth, then we see and experience the results of sin.
Before sin, the minds of Adam and Eve were a wonderful testimony to the wisdom and genius of God! Their intellect was many times greater than the most brilliant minds today. Their characters were controlled by the grand principle of love through faith. The higher powers of their minds were in complete control of their lower nature at all times. Their consciences were enlightened by the pure word of God, and were programmed with only truth; therefore their minds were pure and holy.
Appetite—Friend Or Foe?
"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." James 1:14, 15.
We all like to eat good food, but too often we overeat. Why do we do this? The answer is simple --many of us have perverted appetites. What is appetite? It is our desire or strong liking for food or drink (or anything we do or use), which includes both the good and bad things of life.
You may be wondering why did God create us to have appetites if they get us into so much trouble? If we were not created with appetites or desires, we would not want to "hold on" to material things. We could not have a relationship with any other living creature or person without the power of desire.
Our desires and appetites have a strong effect upon our will power. After sin entered this world the moral powers of the human race weakened. Too often we allow desire and passion to override our reasoning and will power, leading us into temptation and sin. Why? Because we have practiced a lifetime of allowing our desires to control us. As a result, we form bad habits. There are three types of appetites or desires:
In each of the laws of health we have discussed the various aspects that will either destroy or maintain life. The choice is ours. Will we keep and maintain life, or will we indulge and destroy ourselves? Will we act consistently in all aspects of life, or pick and choose only that which we desire? What would happen if we picked which state highway laws to follow? We would soon lose our privilege to drive on the public highways.
We need to understand the true power of the will. This is the governing power of our mind that the Creator gave us to exercise. All the action of our heart and mind depends upon the correct action of the will. Although we have a fallen nature, weakened by sin, we can choose to serve God. We can give our will over to God, to be guided by the same divine mind that created us. When we voluntarily place ourselves in the hands of God, allowing Him to guide and direct our weak and sinful wills, He will guide us into safe paths. He will give us the power to overcome sin. Thus, united in Christ's strength and righteousness, we become partakers of His divine nature. It is by His grace and power working in our lives that we can live an obedient life. Only then can we return to the original lifestyle that God designed for the human race.
"And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts". Galatians 5:24

"I don't understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open and put them on powerful cholesterol-lowering drugs for the rest of their lives."
-- Dean Ornish, M.D.
A balanced diet and regular physical activity are the building blocks of good health. Poor eating habits and too little physical activity can lead to overweight and related health problems. By eating right and being active, you can enjoy good health and remain active throughout your life. Whether you are trying to maintain good health, or trying to get well from cancer, you should take a look at your eating habits and try to improve them. Unfortunately, most people in the western world, including many so-called vegetarians, get little or no real nutrition. With the abundance of food available to us, this should not be the case.
