July 12: It had been a triple-digit hot day with humidity to match, when we came upon Cassoday in far eastern Kansas. Cassoday is the tiniest of villages situated along the main freight route of the Santa Fe Railroad. In spite of its small size, Cassoday enjoys one of the nicest town parks in small town America. Made up of a wonderful forest of hardwood trees, the park provided much needed shade from the fierce Kansas sun. The town opens the park for cross-country cyclists and is an inviting oasis. Here are Charlie and Sue, a wonderful couple from Iowa, also spent the night in the park. They are crossing the country riding a tandom bicycle. BTW, the cafe in town offers a nice variety of home-style fare and homemade pies and cobblers. Oh my!
